It's surprising to find only four major college programs that are still Independent. Notre Dame, Navy, Army and Temple are the last of a dieing breed. Army was in Conference USA for a few years and Temple was in the Big East until they were booted out. Notre Dame and Navy have never had a conference affiliation in football. Notre Dame is expected to win their first eleven games leading up to their showdown with USC on 11/25 in LA. Of course Penn State, Michigan, Michigan State and UCLA may have something to say about that. Navy has a chance to have another good season and get into a bowl game again.

Other than Notre Dame, my favorite Independent team is Navy, they have the best offense in the world and they've shown they compete against top level competition. They were also Poinsettia Bowl champs.

Temple will be joining the Mac in 2007, so next year there will only be 3 independent teams left. Navy is always a fun team to watch, and they are always able to give much better teams a huge scare. 3 straight bowl games, and 2 straight bowl victories are quite impressive as well Paul Johnson has proven to be quite a football coach. With a low grade schedule, I think Navy will make it 4 straight bowl games. It's amazing that this is the same team that went 3-30 over the first 3 years of the 21st century.

Being ex-Navy myself, I also root for the Midshipmen. Unless they are playing Notre Dame, that is. Both of those schools have great respect for each other though. I am also expecting another Bowl Game season from Navy. They always seem to run the option to perfection, which is why they can never be counted out of games, despite maybe not having the size that other teams have.

I too have a spot in my heart for Navy, as my beloved late grandfather was a Navy Commander. I'd hate to see coach Johnson leave for somewhere else.

Lets hope coach Johnson doesn't go elsewhere. He seems a perfect fit for the Naval Academy. Once again he has a senior quarterback to step in and take over. This year Brian Hampton takes over. He is supposed to be a good passer as well as a good runner.

This year Army has a tough schedule. Their last three games are at Air Force, at Notre Dame and the classic game against Navy in Philadelphia. They are going to be hurting at running back, none of their projected running backs has ever rushed the ball in a varsity game.
