View Full Version : Lions "franchise" Redding; he's not happy

Lions DE Cory Redding was given the "franchise" tag by the Lions, which in turn upset the big guy. He was hoping for a shot at free-agency to gain a long-term deal from most likely a better team than he was on. Instead, he'll be paid the average of the five highest-paid players at his position for one year, barring a long-term deal from Detroit. That's more and more unlikely (but not impossible), since Redding wants to get away from GM Matt Millen.

Redding had a break-out season after switching positions to fill in for injuries. He was initially a defensive end, but was switched inside due to injuries to starters Shaun Rogers and Shawn Cody. I'm not exactly sure yet just which position the Lions will be paying Redding for, DE or DL. There's a decent gap in the rate of pay between the two. Knowing the Lions, they'll try their best to shaft the young man (as if they didn't already by tagging him).

Redding was mostly considered a dud at his original position...definitely not a franchise-type player. The switch to the interior of the D-line, for some reason, sparked a beast in the guy and he was a bright spot for an otherwise dismal season. He was hoping his play in the second half of the season would lead to both a big pay day and a ticket out of Detroit. Looks like he'll have to wait another year for that. My question is: where does he fit? We'll have both Shauns back. Does Redding go back to the end position? And if so, at an interior price tag? That doesn't seem so wise, but then again we're talking about the team that is being run by Millen.
