I saw somebody on ESPN suggesting that we take OSU QB Troy Smith, who has been lobbying for a spot on the Cleveland roster.

What say you?

Just for fun, here's an online petition for those who like this idea.

I don't like it.

The Browns have too many holes to fill, and in particular, we need an offensive line. "But wait," you say, "we need more than that!" Sure we do. But if you want a franchise-type quarterback, ever, he needs to be protected. We came to like Charlie Frye, then not like him for what we call "bad decisions." It's impossible to make GOOD decisions in about one-point-eight seconds, which is about all anybody's gonna get right now. Even if the line kept the defense out, we have no depth there.

So I would suggest we trade down, get a decent line, and eventually build to the skill positions. I don't see us making great strides in 2007, maybe not even in 2008.

Here's one guy who thinks we can improve in 2007, and he also thinks we gotta trade down to do it. Good article (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/119339/cleveland_browns_can_improve_in_2007.html)
Right now Cleveland will hold either the third or fourth pick in the draft, depending on the outcome of a coin toss with Tampa Bay. This puts the Browns in a great position to acquire some extra draft picks, something this team desperately needs. The truth is Cleveland is not just one player away from becoming a winning team. Wasting the draft pick on one single player would be senseless.

Troy Smith or Jamarcus Russel/Brady Quinn, (whoever doesn't get picked by the Raiders).

No, no, no. What the Browns should do is trade down a few spots, draft a solid O-lineman, and then in the second round, draft a running back. Frye may remind people of Kyle Boller, but the Ravens stuck with Boller, drafted for the positions where they had weaknesses (WR, DT), and then went 13-3 when they picked up Steve McNair. The Browns need to follow that blueprint.

I say they should get Adrian Peterson. A great running game is a way to build back a franchise. After Adrian (if not available), they should get Joe Thomas (OT) or Alan Branch (DT).

Peterson will almost definitely be available. Oakland will take Russell or Quinn, Detroit.... not Peterson, Tampa Bay won't take Peterson if they win the coin toss.... Cleveland will probably have the option to take him.

I'd take Peterson or Smith. I think they should use last year's example of Vince Young not being picked by Houston to make their decision.

Is Troy Smith worth the third pick in the first round? From what I have read and seen my personal answer would be no.

I do agree with the idea of trading down and picking up additional draft picks, but if left with what we have now I would rather pick an OL like Thomas. Its possible that Smith would still be on the board in the 2nd or even 3rd rounds, and trading up to pick him up at that point might not be a bad idea.

I looked up his projected position a few weeks ago and it seems like the scouts aren't to high on him as a 1st rounder. He's on the small side, but his quarterback skills may force a team to take him in the 1st round.

It is also highly possible that Smith will last until the second round, at which time Cleveland should almost definitely snap him up.

I got a chance to listen to someone on ESPN saying that Smith didn't help himself at the Combine at all. He is definately not someone the Browns should touch with the 1st or even 2nd round pick. If he is there in the middle of the 2nd round then you might be able to convince me to trade up to get him. But right now his stock seems to be falling.

Found this article on Smith in the PlainDealer, take it for what it is worth:

Most analysts predict the Heisman Trophy winner and Cleveland Glenville High product will go in the third or fourth round of the draft primarily because of his height (6-0), but that he has what it takes to be a starter in the NFL.

"He's probably a third-round pick," said NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock. "But I think that two to three years from now, he's so athletic and smart and tough, he'll have an opportunity to play."
