...and says offensive coordinator Mike Martz is staying for another year.

Dollar amounts of Furrey's new deal haven't yet been disclosed. He had wanted to be paid like a #2 receiver, but the Lions wanted to give him #3 money, since that's how they envision using him. The contract is most likely in between. Martz had been mentioned in a few coaching rumors around the league, but wasn't hired for any of them. Apparantly one of the main reasons Furrey decided to come back to Detroit was that Martz told him he'd be back as well. Now the two of them are trying to lure Rams' free-agent WR Kevin Curtis to the Lions. Curtis knows Martz' system well, and has good speed.

Furrey converted from a safety with the Rams (where he was with Martz) to a standout receiver for the Lions in just one season. He finished with 98 catches for 1,086 yards and 6 touchdowns. His 98 grabs were tops in the NFC and second in the NFL, and his yardage was good for 14th in the NFL. Furrey become known for his tough catches over the middle, where he usually took a big hit but almost always held onto the ball. The Lions coaching staff loves his work ethic, and see him as an example of how all players should play.
