Just after the Chicago-Green Bay went final and just seconds after midnight, he announced tearilly to NBC's sideline reporter that he is done. He is retiring.
After finishing the season on a high note, he goes out the classy way. Good for him. That ends an offseason of speculation and troubles and now allows Green Bay to move forward.

A minute into the interview, it sounded like his decision wasn't final.

I didn't watch the game (watched MPC Computers Bowl and Dick Clark) but when I searched the major sports sites (ESPN.com, si.com, sportingnews.com), I didn't see a story. Had to got to NBCSports.com.
A minute into the interview, it sounded like his decision wasn't final.
I hate to sound so cynical but I refuse to believe this until he's not at training camp next season. Given what has occured over the past couple of off-seasons Brett will likely change his mind at least once during this coming off-season.

I think he wants to come back and set the TD passes record.

One more year would get him very close to the career passing yards leader too. (Not to mention the career interceptions leader)

Please get your facts straight. He clearly said he would make his decision in a couple weeks. Although it seems likely he will hang 'em it up, there is no need to sound like John Madden and talk about it every 6 seconds unless you really know the truth.

WELL EXCUSE ME FOR BEING IN THE HEAT OF THE GODDAMN MOMENT.
PARDON ME FOR MISINTERPRETTING HIM CRYING HIS EYES OUT AFTER A MEANINGLESS GAME AFTER A SEASON OF INJURIES AND HIS CONSTANT YEARLY SPECULATION.
And I take that John Madden comment to be a compliment, he knows what the hell he is talking about and is not afraid to say what the hell he is actually thinking and not appeasing the throngs of fans who won't believe anything that they don't like or agree with.

The entire interview did sound like he was going to retire and it was hard to comprehend. efin98 made a mistake that anyone could make.

If he does indeed decide to hang 'em up, it will have been one classy farewell. I love the guy and, for his sake, I hope he makes the right decision. I'd like to see him back again, but I don't want him to not be able to perform.
In the beginning of the interview, it was hard to make out what he was saying. It did indeed sound like he said he was retiring. But it sounds like he re-considered, when he said "you caught me off-guard". I think he realized that he needs to think it over one more time before he decides for sure.

It's cool dude, nothing against you.
I apologize for going off like that. I guess we'll see what his decision is "in a couple weeks."

I'll go a step further, week one of 2007.
