CINCINNATI (AP) -Bengals linebacker David Pollack will need surgery for the cracked bone in his neck, likely ending his football career.

Pollack cracked the bone while making a tackle against the Cleveland Browns on Sept. 17 and was placed in a halo brace that immobilized his neck. Doctors told him that if the fracture healed without surgery, he could resume his career.

The former first-round draft pick was examined Thursday by a specialist who recommended surgery on the fracture, which is expected in the next few weeks.

Pollack wasn't available for comment. All that the Bengals would say is that "no forecast of Pollack's eventual return to football will be made at this time."

The news was released after players were done practicing in the afternoon.

During an interview in October, Pollack said that his career would most likely be over if he had to have surgery.

"If it heals by itself, then I'm fine," he said at the time. "It's just like anything else. I'll be fine to play again. It's just a matter of how it heals."

He said during the interview that if the crack in the bone didn't heal on its own, doctors would have to fuse two vertebrae to stabilize it. He has full range of motion in his arms and legs, but would be risking paralysis if he tried to play after such an operation and hurt the neck again.

"One doctor said it: Not very many people walk away from a broken neck twice," Pollack said. "And that's something that kind of hits home, you know.

"When you fuse two vertebrae together, the likelihood for injury is greatly increased."

Pollack was a first-round draft - 17th overall - in 2005 out of Georgia, where he played defensive end. The Bengals picked him intending to move him to linebacker.

A contract dispute cut into his rookie training camp, and he didn't start until the sixth game. A sprained knee forced him to miss two games during the season. Despite the setbacks, he ranked second on the team with 4½ sacks.

The Bengals were expecting a big second season out of Pollack. He snapped his neck while tackling Browns running back Reuben Droughns during the second game of the season. As he lay on the field, he didn't have feeling in his arms.

He was regaining sensation when he was taken off the field, which made him think he merely pinched a nerve. Medical tests found the small fracture, and he was put in the protective halo immediately.

Tragic news. The last I heard was he had been taken out of the halo brace and was doing well. Football aside, you just have to hope this guy makes it.

The surgery he is to undergo is extremely risky. I hope the NFLPA gets behind Pollack and takes care of him, intead of the way they treated Mike Webster.

CINCINNATI (AP) -Bengals linebacker David Pollack underwent surgery Wednesday in Cincinnati for a bone he cracked in his neck in a game nearly four months ago.
There were no complications in the surgery performed by spine specialist Dr. Anthony Guanciale, and Pollack was resting comfortably, the Bengals said in a statement released Wednesday.

Pollack was expected to remain in the hospital for a few days, the Bengals said.

"No forecast of Pollack's eventual return to football will be made at this time," the Bengals said.

CINCINNATI (AP) -Bengals linebacker David Pollack is encouraged by his recent surgery for a cracked bone in his neck, but hasn't decided whether he will try to resume his NFL career.

Pollack hurt himself while making a tackle on Cleveland's Reuben Droughns during the second game of the season, and was put in a protective halo brace that immobilized the neck. The bone didn't heal as well as hoped, so he had surgery on Jan. 3.

"I'm encouraged by the prognosis from my recent operation," Pollack said Friday in a statement released by the team. "The doctors tell me it went well, maybe even better than expected.

"I haven't given up on the possibility of playing football again, but any decision on that is a way down the road. My recovery is not complete. I've got a ton of work to do with doctors and trainers, and my neck just has to finish healing."

A few weeks after the injury, the 24-year-old Pollack said emphatically that he wouldn't play again if there was any increased risk of another neck injury. He said at the time that his career likely would be over if doctors had to fuse two bones in the neck.

Neither Pollack nor the Bengals will disclose what doctors did during the operation. An update on the Web site for Pollack's foundation said he had the surgery "to correct the disc space" in his neck.

Earlier this week, Pollack's agent told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the linebacker's goal was to return for next season. The agent hasn't return phone messages.

Pollack didn't discuss his career in the statement Friday. He said he won't grant interviews for a while.

"It will be very helpful to me and my family at this point if I can concentrate on my rehab and start thinking about the decisions I'll have in the future," he said.

Pollack was the Bengals' first-round draft pick out of Georgia in 2005. They moved him from defensive lineman to linebacker, a transition slowed by a contract holdout during training camp.

The Bengals were hoping that Pollack and middle linebacker Odell Thurman, a former Georgia teammate taken in the second round of 2005, would anchor the defense for many years. Thurman had an impressive rookie season, but was suspended for the 2006 season because he repeatedly violated the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Thurman was suspended for the first four games of last season after he skipped a drug test. The league extended the suspension to the entire season after he was accused of drunken driving on Sept. 25.

Thurman is eligible to apply for reinstatement before next season. A pretrial hearing on his drunken driving charge is scheduled for Feb. 21 in neighboring Clermont County.
