Is it possible to make it so a member has one post at least before creating a thread. This would definitly limit advertisng.

Hmmm... you're right. I'll propose it on the Mod forum.

Perhaps it would slow down the bots...

But honestly how hard would it be to go in and post a reply that has 10 letters...

and then go back in and create a thread.

Sean is working on a plan... I am sure of it... I will help in the researching over my next days off...

But, til then I know it is not too much fun, but if you can keep on reporting these threads that would be great!

Well my first post was a thread...still a good idea.

As Fumble said, it would help to a point, but I've seen spammers post in actual threads before. While the majority do start their own threads, there is always a way around that.
There is a lot of cleaning up around here that we mods do in regards to spam. The thing is, most of these are probably one shot and done deals anyway. So even if we get rid of the spammer right away, they have their next five names chosen.
I don't think anyone who wants to post in good faith is going to care about not being able to start a thread right off. It's what they post that is the concern.

Another option I've seen in other websties is to have a "welcome" thread. No one actually reads this thread, but a poster must post in this particular thread first before posting to any other threads.

This generally cuts down spam as they'd hav to make two posts, one of which is to a specific thread.

I like this idea, can you please PM me with the link to the forum that does this?

I would like to see how it works exactly.

Thanks!

It might not stop people from either A. posting "hello my name is joe" then going and starting their own thread. B. posting their spam within that thread...

Yet then you know where the spam will be, so I greatly cuts the spam down.

Honestly I think a spammer spamming inside legit threads would be harder for us.. Here is why.

I might see that there are new post within a thread that has been going for ages... It might be a thread that I really have no interest in, so I do not look at the latest reply... Then later I find out that that reply had links to porn sites... UGH!

On the other hand... If that user starts his/her own thread, and titles it "Look at these pics of the Olsen Twins!" Well, I think it is safe to say.. I will check that thread out, and quickly remove it.

I'm sure the original poster of the thread or someone interested in the thread will find out and report it.

OK, my mother posts on another vBulletin forum and apparently a poster can't post links in his first 50 posts, now 50 posts on a small forum like this is hard to come but maybe that 50 could be reduced to 5 or 10. How about this.

No links would certainly be better than no new threads.

Great site, well put together,I also enjoy Baseball Fever. I am somewhat suprised how "quiet",things are in here. Helmet off to those that have chatted it up..Since it has not generated a "buzz",that BBF has, maybe,we can put some concepts together for the forums?...Keep up the good work:sleepy:
