Saints | Bush contemplating not signing?
Fri, 21 Jul 2006 21:33:34 -0700

Jason Cole, of Yahoo Sports, reports there has been some talk of New Orleans Saints rookie RB Reggie Bush not signing in time for training camp. Now, a league source said Bush is toying with the idea of sitting out the entire season and going back in the NFL Draft in 2007 if he doesn't get his price. "No player has ever had the kind of leverage that Reggie Bush has right now," the source said. "The Saints made it clear what they were willing to do before and now we'll see if they're going to get there." Two sources said that talks between the Saints and agent Joel Segal have been nearly non-existent. Wednesday, July 19, Mike Ornstein, who is Bush's marketing agent, told the Clarion-Ledger of Jackson, Miss., that he didn't think Bush would be signed in time for camp. Ornstein is not allowed to negotiate contracts, but he is acutely aware of all of Bush's business matters. Bush supposedly has more than $5 million in the bank from multiple endorsement deals Ornstein has negotiated since Bush left the University of Southern California. Bush could probably sit out 2006 and still be a high pick next year.

Not exactly the way to endear yourself to a rebuilding city.

Wow he didnt even play one game and he already turned into another arrogant A-hole in the NFL!!! Folks this is what you get when you severely overrate players.

Hang on there. I doubt that would possibly be the case. He knows what he would mean to the city of New Orleans. Then again, he is from USC and he cheated in order to beat ND.

I agree that he wouldn't actually forfeit the year and re-enter the draft, but it is interesting to see him talk about taking part in the rebuilding process of the city and then threaten to not play there.

He's just being a little bitch, he is upset that he didn't get picked #1 and he's taking it out on a team that plays in a city that has much more to worry about than making sure poor little Reggie gets paid more than Mario Williams.

Plus, the Saints don't really need Bush because like the Texans they have a running back. I thought it was dumb they picked him, even though Bush could help them on special teams as a return man. How would Deuce feel though if his backup, and basically a special teams guy got all that money?

He's not a super player, and I commend the Texans for having the guts to pass on Reggie Bush and going with their vision and being willing to take the heat for not taking the marquee skill player. The Jets took heat too for not taking Leinart even though they have enough QBs.

Another reason he shouldn't get all that money: He split backfield time with LenDale White. If Reggie gets all that money without having been "the" guy in the USC backfield, shouldn't LenDale deserve close to the same amount?

You should take the best talent in drafts. Just because you get someone who you arn't going to use right away, and intend to use later, dosn't mean they will be there later. There is always a possibility of trade, and when that happens, it is better to have the best player in the draft, not what you need most. Besides which, Deuce is getting old for an RB isn't he?

Vince Young just got signed to the Titans, worth more then the contract of Mario, which probably won't help for Reggie's situation. I still think they will sign him though.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) -- Reggie Bush agreed to a six-year deal with the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night and the Heisman Trophy winner will report to training camp Sunday, The Associated Press has learned.

A source with direct knowledge of the negotiations said the deal had been agreed to, but that he couldn't disclose financial terms.

Reached by phone at his home in New York, Bush's agent, Joel Segal, said he wouldn't comment until a deal had been signed. However, he said he was traveling to Jackson on Sunday to meet with Bush and the Saints.

The team didn't immediately return phone calls seeking comment late Friday night.

Bush, the Saints' only unsigned player, has missed the team's first three practices of training camp.

The former Southern California running back was selected second overall, between No. 1 Mario Williams and No. 3 Vince Young.

Williams signed a six-year, $54 million contract with Houston, with $26.5 million guaranteed. Young agreed to a five-year deal with Tennessee, with an option for a sixth, with $25.7 million guaranteed and an overall value that could reach $58 million with option and roster bonuses and salary.

The 6-foot, 200-pound Bush had 1,740 yards rushing and 2,890 all-purpose yards for Southern Cal last season as a junior. The Trojans had a chance for their third straight national title, but fell 41-38 to Texas in the Rose Bowl.

Bush averaged 8.9 yards a carry, caught 37 passes for 478 yards and led the nation in all-purpose yards with 222.3 per game.

Looks like he is in!

If 27 is old (he'll turn 28 in December).

In running back years he is. He will have more down years than up years ahead of him...
