Who has the most career rushing yards without a 1,000 yard season

I'm going to go out on a limb and pick a guy I watched play when I was growing up: Randall Cunningham.
Cunningham, a quarterback, rushed for 4,928 yards in his career. His career rushing high was 942 yards in 1990.
He also added 35 rushing touchdowns. And yet, the media crucified him in this town.

Mike Alstott has 4965 rushing yards and is still active- barely.

Both good guesses, but I have about 9 people over the 5,000 career mark without a 1,000 yard season

So... It must be a few "obscure" players from the 40's or 50's?

"Obscure" is all relative, but the top 7 that I have with over 5,000 career rushing yards without a 1,000 yard season all started their careers in the 50's or 60's (mostly 60's, including the answer to this question). Of the two other guys over 5,000 without a 1,000 yard season, Dexter Bussey played in the late 70's / early 80's, and John Williams played in the late 80's / early 90's.
Since this question has been up there a couple of weeks, I'll throw out the answer. Don Perkins rushed for 6,217 yards for Dallas in the 60's without a 1,000 yard season. His best season was 945 yards. Going into 2006, 6,217 yards was good enough for 60th place all-time.

That was a good question- thanks for posting. That is why I used the term obscure in quotes- I meant to use that loosely. Once I guessed Alstott, I had no other ideas of whom it could be... Nice work on the question.

By the way, Alstott went over 5,000 yards last weekend, just barely. I think he's sitting at 5,002 right now. I'm happy for him.
Did HOF'er John Henry Johnson reach 1,000 yards in a season? Alex Webster?
I remember Dexter Bussey well, he was the Lions go to guy before drafting Billy Sims. A buddy of mine got into a little incident with his son.

Johnson did, but Webster never did.
