The University of Chicago, which produced the first Heisman winner and was coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg, dropped football in the late 30s and has never taken it up again.

They were one of the co-founders of the conference so them dropping football and other sports was a big blow, a shame as they were an excellant team...
Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they could rejoin the conference if they chose to as they retained their working relationship with the other schools through something called the "CIC" (http://www.cic.uiuc.edu/AboutCIC.shtml).

It's not a widely known fact nor a major event. Not everyone is as in depth in the early history of the sport nor up to date on the major milestones of that conference.

I just happened to come upon it when looking at previous Big 10 Champions. Right there on wikipedia.
