I would say the first Steelers-Cowboys Super Bowl, when football pass baseball as the most popular sport. NCAA has been huge for a while now. NFL didn't get really popular till the Colts-Giants game in 1959 at OYS.

I would also say the Colts-Giants NFL championship 1958 game at Yankee Staidum, was a big thing at the time.

I'd say it wasn't until the late 1970's that football really challenged baseball. I think Monday Night Football was a major reason the NFL grew so much in the 1970's.

Super Bowl III, with the modern athlete/playboy Namath and the Jets beating hard-nosed, crew-cutted family man Unitas and the Colts is often pointed to as when football really began to become mainstream. Add to that MNF, and the 70's was the decade it really caught up.

I would agree at some point in the 70's, football became the number one game in America.
