I vaguely remember these battles(I was young). I remember reading in John Madden's book that Gene Upshaw always had a hard time handling Ernie Holmes. Also read(from an Oakland player, so maybe it's off) that Art Shell used to "destroy" Dwight White.
So what's the answer? Who usually won these battles between these two great lines? I know that sacks weren't an official stat at the time, but is there any way of researching who got sacks off of whom in these meetings? Or who got the best of whom overall?
Or is this an impossible thing to determine?
