All Injured Reserve Team 2006
(original incarnation)
Offense:
Quarterback: Chris Simms, Tampa Bay
Running Back: Domanick Davis, Houston
Full Back: Alan Ricard, Baltimore
Wide Receiver: Amani Toomer, New York Giants
Wide Receiver: Robert Ferguson, Green Bay
Tight End: Erron Kinney, Tennessee
Left Tackle: Travelle Wharton, Carolina
Left Guard: Edwin Mulitalo, Baltimore
Center: LeCharles Bentley, Cleveland
Right Guard: Damien Woody, Detroit
Right Tackle: Kenyatta Walker, Tampa Bay
Defense:
Defensive End: Jevon Kearse, Philadelphia
Defensive End: Reggie Haywood, Jacksonville
Defensive Tackle: John McCargo, Buffalo
Linebacker: Dan Morgan, Carolina
Linebacker: Lavar Arrington, New York Giants
Linebacker: Mike Peterson, Jacksonville
Linebacker: David Pollack, Cincinnati
Cornerback: Daylon McCutcheon, Cleveland
Cornerback: Brian Kelly, Tampa Bay
Free Safety: Troy Vincent, Buffalo
Strong Safety: Mike Brown, Chicago
Special Teams:
Kicker/Punter: John Hall, Washington
Punt/Kick Returner: Jeremy Bloom, Philadelphia
What do you think? The offense isn't too impressive at the skill positions but the line is solid -- or would be if it wasn't on IR. The defense is the strength of this team. I'm employing a 3-4 defense because enough pressure could be put on opposing QBs by Kearse and Haywood. And Arrington and Peterson could absolutely stuff the run. Of course with Troy Vincent and Mike Brown, the safety blitz would be a regular occurrence.
Jeremy Bloom returned five kicks for touchdowns at Colorado. It will eventually be interesting to see what he can do in the NFL.
Any substitutions or additions, subtractions or win predictions?

As soon as any of those players officially goes on the IR they'll be first-team starters on the squad and huge upgrades.
I've also heard rumors that Miami might IR Daunte Culpepper for the remainder of the season. And Kansas City's Trent Green might be headed for the same fate. I'd make either of them first team over Chris Simms anyday of the week -- especially Sunday.
The New York Giants are very close to putting Michael Strahan on the IR. Marcus Stroud is apparently in the same situation in Jacksonville. If either goes on then I'm switching to a base 4-3 defense and I'd probably bench David Pollack.
Think of how many sacks Reggie Haywood, Jevon Kearse and Michael Strahan/Marcus Stroud could generate. Morgan and McCargo could shut down the rush and Arrington and Peterson could just go crazy!

Big offensive addition this week. Clinton Portis broke his hand in the first quarter against the Eagles. Surgery will likely be required and that should land Portis officially on the IR probably by mid-week.
This move stinks. It officially sinks my pre-season Superbowl choice. Plus I had Portis on my fantasy squad. Now I have to rely on Joe Addai. Not so lucky am I.

I would also add Orlando Pace to one of the OT slots. Both, Portis and Pace are officially placed on IR now.

A shiney new injured left tackle, how exciting! That is unless you're a Rams fan. I think with Portis and Pace the team is like one Strahan or Stroud away from being a legit Superbowl contender -- at least in the ether.
I wonder how this IR team would stack up against IR teams from years past, could this be the best ever? Or is this just a mediocre year for the injury department? Anybody know?
McNabb is your new QB I assume? :(

Now you can add Simeon Rice in at Defensive End. This team is getting better by the week.
Titans TE Ben Troupe is out for the season but from what I hear it isn't certain if he will be put on IR.

He's no Michael Strahan but Simeon Rice will do.
I created this list to shine some light on my least favorite aspect of the sport: inherent violence. It seems like every year fantastic teams are constructed by general managers and coaches who work 80, 90, 100 hours a week; spend hundreds of hours preparing for the draft and countless hours evaluating and pursuing free agents and undrafted players; teams spend a good portion of the "off-season" practicing and conditioning in mini-camps; then increasingly earlier in July and August camps open to two-a-day practices; we have four pre-season games all leading up to the regular season. Then almost always on opening night some bigtime QB or RB blows out a knee or a shoulder and a team gets sunk for the season, only a few minutes into it.
And as the season goes on more and more teams get sunk because the NFL is so violent that massive player injury is just an accepted part of the game. This year I think Jacksonville and Philadelphia got hit the hardest. But there are still six regular season games to play and I'm sure a few more contenders are going down before the final seconds tick off the game clock.
Jacksonville has lost its QB Byron Leftwich, its top DE Reggie Haywood, its best run stuffing LB Mike Peterson, RB Greg Jones who was poised to have a break-out year, and has played most of the season without DT Marcus Stroud. It is amazing that team still has a winning record.
Philadephia has lost its QB Donovan McNabb for the second year in a row, it lost "The Freak" DE Jevon Kearse who can single-handedly take over a game, it has had to play several games without left tackle William (Tra) Thomas and top WR Donte Stallworth. Plus we never got to see what Jeremy Bloom could have done on special teams.
There seems to be no solution for this problem. The injuries are part of the game. I just think there's something inherently wrong with seeing a team's whole season get sunk on one play: like last year in the playoffs when the Steelers' Kimo Von Scumbag "unintentionally" tackled Bengals' QB Carson Palmer directly on his knee brace, knocking him out of the game and changing the whole course of the post-season. Anybody think the outcome of that Steelers vs Bengals game would have been a little different if Palmer had played the whole game? I sure do.
But that's just football.

Let's get ready to add Ronnie Brown. It also sounds like Tobeck in Seattle could be out a spell. Need another QB? I'll give you Aaron Rodgers. One last one, let's add Darren Sproles at the kick/ punter returner position. Man, we really cranking these guys, aren't we?

Eventually we should attempt to make a depth chart with this. The backfield could be tremendous with Portis and Brown (if he goes on IR), plus LaMont Jordan as a receiving back.

I know, what is it with these prima donna wide outs? Can't at least one of them get seriously injured and be out for the rest of the year? (I'm looking at you Chad Johnson.) Players are so selfish these days!
By the way, today was the last day to activate players from the PUP list and the Chiefs didn't activate Priest Holmes -- meaning he can't be activated for the remainder of the season. I'm not sure where that leaves him in terms of status. He can't be activated but he's not officially on IR. If he goes on IR, I think he'll take Davis' spot as 2nd team RB -- still waiting to see what happens with Ronnie Brown.
The 2nd team offensive line would get a lot better if Seattle would IR center Robbie Tobeck (missed three straight games) and right guard Sean Locklear (missed four straight games). They keep holding out. They've got WR Bobby Engram who has misses seven straight games, too.

Yeah, unfortunately Byron is done for the year. I tweaked the second team a little today. It is actually looking fairly good.
But I can't decide if I want to include Bertrand Berry as one of the DEs. The team already has Patrick Kerney and Reggie Haywood at that position. Berry would certainly be an upgrade at DT but I can't remember him playing that position for a long, long time.

Finally today the Dolphins put Daunte Culpepper on the IR. I've been waiting for this since October. As if anyone who saw him play thought he was going to get on the field again this season -- right.
Shaun Rogers has been added as DT on the 2nd Team All IR Team. And the second team might get a lot better soon. The Bears might put DT Tommie Harris on IR, allowing a switch to a 4-3 defense. (Although Harris would obviously be first team. McCargo would move down to second team.) This would greatly improve the defensive line.
But the best news of the day, unless you're a Seahawks fan is that Darrell Jackson is suffering from turf toe and will definitely miss this week's game and maybe more. He'd be the top-notch wide out the IR teams have been lacking all season.

Well first team fullback Tony Richardson has made about half dozen Pro Bowls -- blocking for Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. And it was second team fullback Alan Ricard leading the way and clearing blocking holes a few years back when Jamal Lewis had his 2,000+ yard rushing season.
In fact, I think Ricard even blocked for Priest Holmes during the latter's brief stay in Baltimore that resulted in Holmes first 1,000 yard season.
This is a half and full back rich IR season: Curtis Martin, Priest Holmes, Marshall Faulk, Alan Ricard, Tony Richardson, Greg Jones, Patrick Pass, Domanick Davis, Clinton Portis and I'm sure I'm missing a few.

And yet the Bengals are "only" 8-5, (4-1 in division, (6-3 in conference). The losses to Baltimore, San Diego and New England are acceptable. But the Bengals should have killed the Falcons and Tampa Bay.
The Bengals are definitely playing their best football late. Palmer is definitely back and should be a force in the playoffs. I just wonder what this team could have done with home field advantage and a first week bye.
I think maybe the Bengals' lack of injuries this year might be some kind of karmic pay back for the dirty play the Steelers in last year's playoffs. The Steelers seem to be reaping what they sowed too.

When they're all pretty bad, they're usually very happy that I'm letting them share carries. eg. I traded Domanick Davis for a first and third-round pick, so I got Maurice Drew. He would then split carries with Morency, who was thrilled to get playing time, and took everything I said as a compliment. Even when it wasn't.

Mike Rucker tore his ACL yesterday. I'm not sure if teams are still putting players on the IR. But there are an awful lot of excellent DE on the IR this season: Kernay, Berry, Rucker, Haywood, Kearse, Rice -- Strahan should really be on here too. He's missed like five straight games.
But I've got my fingers crossed that we can pick up a top wide out tonight. I'd settle for Chris Henry but I'd rather have #85 or T.J. Housyourmama. Plus there's Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison, the picking are rich tonight, now one of them just need to tear an acl -- even an MCL would work at this point.

So cruel..
I know but such is life.
It's cruel to the All IR Team, too. Michael Strahan should be on it but isn't because the Giants won't IR him.
And now news that the weakest link, the wide receivers, on the ALL IR Team could be solved. Javon Walker, wide out extraordinaire, suffered a first-degree shoulder separation in last week's game. But the Broncos won't put him on IR. With only two games left, why would a team do that anyway? And second, if Walker were to be placed on the IR, I'm pretty sure that knocks that player out for all of that year's playoffs aswell.
So we got Darrell Jackson with toe problems and Javon Walker with shoulder problems, each would greatly improve the ALL IR Team -- but neither will be officially placed on the list, even if they don't play another snap this season.
So cruel.

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Browns on Friday placed
rookie inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on injured reserve
with turf toe.
Cleveland's second-round draft pick, Jackson suffered the
injury in last week's 27-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Jackson, 23, started in all 13 of the Browns' games this
season and recorded 93 tackles, the second-highest total
on the team. The rookie had four games with at least 10
tackles.

LAME!
Reading up on it, it sounds an awful lot like a stronger condition of what was happening with my toe about a month ago. It hurt during football season, but it's mostly gone away. With two games left, I can understand putting him on the IR with it, but not for a playoff team. It should heal.
