The Lions attempted to bolster the defense by trading defensive tackle Cory Redding to Seattle for five-time Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson. The deal will also require the Lions to send the Hawks a fifth-round draft pick.
In terms of money, Redding signed a seven-year, $47.8 million contract in 2007 -- after which he was moved from defensive end to DT. Peterson signed a seven-year, $54 million contract in 2006.
To me this seems like a lateral move, as Peterson's best years seem behind him and Redding's best years are in front of him, but for a season this could look balance positive for the Lions. I'm not convinced. This move, however, helps the Lions play a 34 defense -- which is all the rave these days in the NFL.
Here's me being crazy, this move could also result in the Lions selecting DT B.J. Rali, Boston College, with the first overall pick in the draft! :twocents:
