This story documents the Dianabol-aided Chargers 1963 AFL Championship and the introduction of steroids into modern professional football.

It is a must read and notes that several star players were juicers -- before they may have even known what they were taking.

Great read, football junkie. I never knew that steriods in the NFL went back so far? I just figured they started sometime in the mid 1970s.

The earliest I had heard before reading the article was around the same time you mentioned. Guys like Lyle Alzado.

The Pittsburgh Steelers run in the 1970s was completely fueled by steroids. That is how they got their competitive advantage, the entire team was 'roided up, head & shoulders more so than everyone else in the league. That's why Mike Webster died so early for example. Like Alzado.

We don't know really know this for a fact. Webster had various ailments later in life like dementia. He was diagnosed with brain damamge in 1999. Alzado died from a brain tumor. There is no direct link known between steriod usage and brain tumors.
