I'm watching this game and it doesn't seem that people realize that there was a 5th down. When did people realize the 5th down.

I'm not sure I get it. When Bienemy jumped and was hit it was 3rd down? And 4th was the spike?

People realized it officially the next day. I have always had the suspicion that CU coaches knew it all along. Heck, even the Missouri coaches never said anything at the time. I remember watching that game. Then remember all the replays of the 5 downs for a long time. The spike was actually 4th down, but somehow everybody (including the officials) had it as 3rd down. After all, who would spike the football on 4th down? I believe the mishap occured on 1st. The refs placed the ball down and CU quick spiked. Well, for some odd reason, the side judges had not yet set the chains (even though thats the reason the clock stops in College Football), so the refs didnt believe the spike was an actual play. After that initial spike, it was still 1st down in their books.

I remember at the time thinking something was strange, but it didn't really dawn on me exactly what. Looking back now, the funny part was that the Mizzou coaches insisted CU go for the extra point, with the hope that they could somehow get the ball and score to get 2 points and the tie.

Another thing that helped out CU was the stopping of the clock after that Bienemy stop and pile up. The clock could have easily run out right then there if the scorekeeper hadn't stopped the clock to allow them to get up from the pile up.

All and all a very chaotic ending to a good football game. You have to remember there were fans storming the field as well before the game was officially over. 1st the Mizzou fans when they initially stopped Bienemy from scoring, then the CU fans after the TD. It was total pandemonium.

I don't remember it at all, I was only 3 months old!! But, that was crazy! That play won Colorado the national championship.
