On Monday it is very likely that Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL's steroids policy.

How does this affect your opinion of Merriman as a player?

Before this I viewed him as a player on the cusp of achieving greatness. Now, I see him as just another cheat.

With this physique he had to take steroids!! But on a serious note I've lost a great deal of respect for him because of this. He was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the year last year and he was holding his own this year, it's just unfortunate this had to happen.

The sad part is that he has been accepted by and is loved by the community there in San Diego. I am sure they are feeling really let down by him at this point. My opinion on him has not differed much though. Maybe I am calloused by the amount of steroids being used in all manner of sports nowadays, but I still see him as a great player. He tried to get the same advantage many other atheletes do. He got caught, now will serve his punishment. Hopefully he will get cleaned up after this and get his career back on track.

On a side note, I hope one of the games he is out is the Raiders game:p

Now that I have rethought this over, one of his teammates, Luis Castillo, admitted to taking steroids before the draft last year. It hurt his stock but it made him a better person in the process, I'm hoping this will impact Merriman positively also.

Merriman is one of my favorite players. I've watched him since his college days at UMD. Basically, I'm upset about it. I don't really care as much, though. Not as much as baseball. Steroids just don't have as much of an impact on the game of football as they do in baseball.

WHAT???? A HUGE LB THAT IS AS FAST AS MOST RBS TOOK STEROIDS???? I AM SHOCKED!!!!! Yeah this isn't a big thing at all he just got caught there's plenty of NFL players who roid up they just don't get caught, have you had a good look at AJ Hawk's forehead? No one is that ugly naturally, he's roided up. Baseball and Cycling get all the crap for roiding, but NFL players probably do it the most.

Agreed, and whilst I am annoyed at this occuring it seems to be more socially accepted that football players can take roids but other athletes aren't.

Also, does it seem that this isn't getting the media attention that it should? Is this the media networks protecting their investment in the NFL, or am I just being paranoid?
