Interesting discussion last in New England about former Patriots player and coach Andre Tippett.

Tippett was a five time pro bowler, leader of the improbable '85 Patriots team that got spanked in Super Bowl XX, a member of the all-decade team for the 1980s, recorded 100 sacks in his career including leading the AFC twice, and was the anchor on the team during their worst period in history. He is also the guy who mentored the crop of linebackers that were key to the 3x Super Bowl champions. If not for him they would not have been as successfull.

The argument for him by the former players and reporters during the discussion was likening him to Lawrance Taylor of the Giants in his abilities and success but due to playing on some of the worst teams in history during the end of his career he gets knocked down a peg and can't get into the discussion room for the Hall of Fame.

Is he Hall of Fame worthy? Does playing on those horrid teams prevent him from being enshrined?

There were some great linebackers from that time period that unfortunately were overshadowed by LT. Rickey Jackson of the Saints also comes to mind. He deserves more acclaim than what he received. Was he HOF-worthy? I think all-decade would warrant heavy discussion come election time.

That was a major point of the discussion that you hit on. Outside of LT and any member of the Bears the other greats of the decade can't get into the room for discussion when the Hall of Fame candidates are being discussed.

A real shame, put them in another city and they would have been in Canton immediately instead of having their names thrown around 5, 10, 15 years after their retirement...

I don't know about that. It took Harry Carson a long time to get in as well, and he played in NY. Of course, he also suffered from being overshadowed by LT.

I also agree that anyone named all-decade should definately get a heavy look at come ballot time. If you are all decade, then you you stood out from your peers for an extended period time, seems simple to me.
