This forum has been dead all season. Don't we have any San Diego fans? I lived out there for a while and I have to admit if I were till there I wouldn't be on a NFL message board either -- maybe that explains it.
The Chargers are in first place in the AFC West, despite playing a "rookie" quarterback in Philip Rivers. And the team and the young QB have looked good. Rivers has a 67.6 CMP% and 96.9 QB Rating and that's awfully good for a red-shirt rookie.
LaDainian is being LaDainian and Gates is being Gates -- and the chargers have a pair of all-time greats.
The team has scored 80 points in three games and has only given up 23! That's barely a touchdown a game. If the Chargers even come close to keeping that up all season we're going to be talking about "the greatest defense ever." Yes, of course that's a huge IF!
With Denver doing their running back by committee and without Gary Kubiak and Kansas City playing a big chunk of their season without Trent Green -- the Chargers should walk away with the division. Plus it helps that they get to play the Raiders twice -- kick 'em when they're down.
It's not all good news. Keenan McCardell is injured and old and without him Eric Parker is the team's best wide out. Good think they have Gates and Tomlinson catching all those passes. Malcom Floyd is a big, 6'5", wide out from Wyoming and he should be able to pick up some of the slack as the season progresses. All Rivers should have to do is throw it up and make it a jump-ball between Floyd and opposing DBs. I'm guessing he'll win most all of those match-ups.
After the Chargers get past the Pittsburgh game this Sunday, Oct. 8, the schedule looks relatively easy for the next four weeks and could lead to a 6-2 start. Then they've got two rough weeks at Cincinnati and then at Denver. But Oakland, Buffalo, Kansas City and Arizona -- all creampuffs -- await down the stretch. Winning 11 games in not out of the question and I think that would seal the deal in the AFC West.
Why is nobody talking about this team?
