The horror. The horror.
Okay, maybe it's not that bad. But the Bills are going to need a miracle to tame the Bears this week at Soldier Field. There is, however, reason for hope and his name is Rex Grossman.
Admittedly Grossman has put up great numbers this year. But he's done it against suspect secondaries: the Packers, the Lions, the Vikings and the Seahawks. He has faced no set of defensive backs as formidable as the collection the Bills sport.
If the Bills have hope of winning this game it's that Angelo Crowell can continue to step up his game and replace Takeo Spikes and help London Fletcher contain the run of Thomas Jones and shutdown the potential explosiveness of Cedric Benson. Then it's just a matter of Grossman matching up against the Bills secondary -- and I'm liking those odds.
Sure the Bills are going to have problems scoring. The Bills are going to have to try to establish the run early and not give up on it even if they're getting stuffed -- which they will be. That's the only way to open up something downfield.
The Bills can win this game by making big plays on special teams, i.e. Terrence McGee possibly returning one; the secondary shutting down Rex Grossman and opportunistically taking advantage of his errors; relying on Rian Lindell -- only one missed field goal the whole season.
In what should be a low scoring game winning or losing might very well come down to Lindell's leg.
