In his book, Run to Daylight Lombardi mentions Crowley and Crowley's home town of-you guessed it, Green Bay, Wisconsin.

That would fall into the "small world isn't it" category!

Grantland Rice was the writer that dubbed the Notre Dame players The Four Horesmen, in his account of the Notre Dame-Army game October 18, 1924, at the Polo Grounds in New York City:
"Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden."

One of my favorites. I think it captures the brutality of the early days of football perfectly.

At the time of the photo (circa 1931) Crowley one of three of
the Four Horsemen serving as a college head coach. Elmer
Layden, later Notre Dame coach and NFL commissioner, was
at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and Harry Stuhldreher was
the head coach at Villanova.
