View Full Version : "The Freak" out for the year.
Well this sucks...Definately the worst of the injuries sustained in the dissappointing game against the Giants.
PHILADELPHIA -- Jevon Kearse will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury the star defensive end sustained in Philadelphia's overtime loss to the Giants on Sunday.
Kearse's injury included sprains of multiple ligaments, including the medial collateral ligament, the lateral collateral ligament, and the posterior cruciate ligament.
...SNIP...
Guard Shawn Andrews strained his shoulder, cornerback Rod Hood left with a heel injury, tight end L.J. Smith sprained his shoulder and running back Brian Westbrook has swelling in his knee.

Saw that game yesterday and all I have to say is "OUCH!"
The trainers stupidly had Kearse walk off the field. They definitely should have carted him off the playing field. Watching him try to walk was excruciating and he probably hurt himself worse by doing it.
Losing Kearse changes the whole Philly defensive scheme and, I think, is going to expose the secondary. With less pressure on opposing QBs there will be a lot more pressure on the Eagles' DBs and I don't think they're up to the challenge.
Of course there's a very slim chance I could be wrong.

The Eagles DB's showed they were weak yesterday. They will be stripped down now that Jevon Kearse is out.

On the bright side I believe the Eagles play the Niners next week. Alex Smith shouldn't be too hard to rattle and Antonio Bryant is the team's best wide out. Brian Dawkins should have no trouble handling him. If Jeremiah Trotter can shutdown Frank Gore, the Niners might not score.
The main thing is Darren Howard has to step up now and dominate.
The schedule is really going to help the Eagles. Donald Driver and Greg Jennings don't add up to much for Green Bay in week 4: at Philly. But the Eagles secondary is going to take a beating against Dallas in week 5, with Jason Witten, Anthony Fasano, Terry Glenn and T.O. running wild. Luckily after that the Eagles play the Saints, the Bucs and the Jags -- not exactly pass efficient offenses.

That'll help the secondary out, because the Niners tallest wide reciever is Antonio Bryant at 6'2". I think Darren Howard can step up, but he can't dominate. There's no replacing "The Freak".
There is some good news to come from this. Well not really, he's still out for the season but it was only two of the ligaments that were actually damaged (which is good news for Jevon). Here is an excerpt from the news report:
The bottom line remains the same: Jevon Kearse could not have played again this season, though the damage to his left knee was not as bad as originally feared, and the Eagles defensive end should be OK by minicamp time next spring.
But some of the details and interpretations were a little different when the Eagles made athletic trainer Rick Burkholder available yesterday to talk about the optimistic assessment offered Thursday by Kearse's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, following Kearse's arthroscopic surgery, performed by Dr. John Uribe.
"We thought that he had three ligaments damaged. He really only had two, once they got in there," Burkholder said. "When [Uribe] got in there and looked around, he had to fix his lateral meniscus, which is the main thing he had to fix. Then he looked at his medial collateral ligament, which was totally torn, but was starting to heal back to the bone, so he left that alone. And he looked at his posterior cruciate ligament, which was torn partially from the bone. He felt that because he was going to allow the MCL to heal up, the PCL would heal up as well. He didn't want to do a big reconstruction, open him up, if he was going to heal down fine.
"His lateral collateral ligament, which we thought was involved, from the MRI, was actually just bruised probably, from the hit. It wasn't torn at all. He also subluxated his kneecap slightly... had some wear and tear on the backside of his kneecap, which he had cleaned out a little bit by Dr. Uribe. He does have what is called a tibial plateau fracture, which is a fracture not through the whole bone but across the bone. You've got to protect him on that for about 3 months, alone... They noticed that one of his calves, the calf attaches up behind the knee, was torn.
