I was not able to find a discussion of the 'great defenses win championships" adage by searching this forum. If it has already been discussed, could someone please suggest a keyword that I can use to find it?

If it has not been discussed, do you agree with the adage?

Thanks.

Let's see if I can get a fun little controversy started:

Super Bowl III: Jets 16 - Colts 7

Super Bowl XLI: Colts 29 - Bears 17

Super Bowl III always seemed to me to be a poorly-played game where the Colts couldn't execute well (missed receivers, stale offense) and the Jets had one good drive and got close enough a couple of other times for field goals.

If your defense is your best feature, you'd better at least have consistent offense or control the ball when you have it. That was the one thing the Buccaneers had when they won, a good running game with dual weapons in Alstott and Pittman, plus Keyshawn & Co. The Ravens had a fine running game and Shannon Sharpe always seemed to make that one big play they needed..

From the box score ( www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/boxscore/sbiii )

Time of possession
36:10 - Jets
23:50 - Colts

I did some research on this a few years ago, and determined that a No. 1 rated offense was just as likely to win the Super Bowl as a No. 1 rated defense.

While you need to be good on both sides of the ball, what you don't necessarily need is a great QB. If Rypien and Dilfer can win SB titles, then almost anyone can!

Captain Comeback -

What has bothered me the most about the "great defenses win champsionships" adage is that it doesn't make logical sense.

Is it possible for you to post a summary of your research?

Thanks.

I will try to find it . . . if I can't, I believe it would be fairly simple to recreate.
