View Full Version : Single-season INT record & can Farve break it?

Through my completely haphazard and incredulous "research" into the matter, I've established that the single season record for interceptions thown is 42 by George Blanda of the 1962 Houston Oilers -- who finished 11-3 that year!

I'm not absolutely sure that Blanda's 42 INTs in the record, because this isn't exactly a record people want to advertise, none of the stat sites have a listing for this category (for obvious reasons), and I didn't feel like doing research all day just to verify it.

I have a two part question: if anyone knows off the top of their head (what would it be doing there anyway?) is Blanda the record holder, and more importantly can Farve break the record this year?

It was noted last night that Farve lead the NFL last season with 29 INT -- and by a healthy margin.

Other great or great(ish) QBs like Fran Trakantan and John Hadl threw 32 interceptions in one season towards the end of their careers.

Can Farve step it up a notch and go out in a blaze of (well not glory) by throwing 43 INTs this year?

I bet he'll only throw 30-40 INT but they'll probly put in Ingle Martin or Brain Wrobel before Brent could even throw that many INT...

It is indeed a record...The top 3 are:

Most Passes Had Intercepted, Season
42- George Blanda, Houston, 1962
35- Vinny Testaverde, Tampa Bay, 1988
34- Frank Tripucka, Denver, 1960

No way Favre breaks that record. He had one off year in a stellar career. Although I agree with everyone that says he needs to hang 'em up, but I just don't see more than 25 INTs.

He won't break the record but he will have the worst mark since Testaverde.

I say 33 before he is yanked from the game for good.

I say 35 INTs, sometimes he just chucks the ball up with nobody in the vicinity, those are just signs of a detereorating (sp?) quarteback.

Week 1 was dismal, first time the Packers have been shut out in about 16 years or something like that.

Farve tossed two interceptions and went 15 for 29 for 170 yards.

On the bright side, Ahman Green rushed for 110 yards on 20 carries. Maybe the Packers will opt to take the ball out of Farve's hands and pile on the carries this year. That will certainly help him cut down on the interceptions.

But he threw another pass today right to a defensive players, like he did a bunch of times in 2005. I'm sticking by my vote that he'll throw only about 25 picks this year.

I don't see Favre getting the INT record either. Even if GB stinks for the whole year, someone will find a way to bench Brett once he hits 30 or so.

Through the first quarter of the season "Favre" has thrown only 5 interceptions -- putting him on track to throw only 20 interceptions this season.

Meaning in the projections hold up, happily or perhaps sadly, if you hate Favre, he won't even get to half of George Blanda's single season interception record.

Hasselbeck might be able to do it though!

Brett threw no interceptions in week five -- leaving his season total at five. He'd need to throw 38 interceptions in the last 11 games of the season to break the record.

I think we can close this thread out. This obviously is not going to happen.
