Will Warrick Dunn make it to the Hall of Fame?

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/D/DunnWa00.htm

Career stats as of today, September 17, 2008:

168 games played, 148 games started, 2,504 carries, 10,284 yards gained rushing, 48 rushing touchdowns, longest carry 90 yards, 4.1 yards per carry average, 467 receptions, 4,041 yards gained receiving, 8.7 yards per catch average, 15 receiving touchdowns, longest reception 86 yards, 14,325 total yards from scrimmage.

Too bad he missed playing for Tampa Bay in 2002 or he'd have a Super Bowl ring too.

Nope. He's always been one of my favorite players, but he has fringe numbers right now. I think he'll be one of those guys that gets in, say 30-35 years after his eligibilty.

Dunn is a good player but health issues have kept his numbers down a bit. He's part of a big pack when not too long ago 10,000 rushing yards was an automatic and short-wait ticket.

I'd say no. If Roger Craig can't come close as an all-purpose back, Dunn won't.

I always liked Warrick Dunn. I always rooted for him to do good.

One thing he might have going against him too for the Hall, is he has not exactly been a prolific touchdown scorer.

He's been a good player, but hasn't really done anything to make me say, "Wow, he's great!" If you look at his stats, there are serious peaks and lulls in his yearly rushing totals- he looks inconsistent. Plus he has like 48 career rushing TDs. LT had half that many in one season!

Not to split hairs, but doesn't this amount to a "yes" or at least a "maybe" vote?

I'd say no. If Roger Craig can't come close as an all-purpose back, Dunn won't.

Great comparison. Craig is in line ahead of Dunn. Another interesting all-purpose back was Herschel Walker, who was a better talent than Dunn but falls short career-wise

I think the best comparison is Ricky Watters. They are very similar. Neither is deserving (based on Dunn to date)

Tiki Barber will be an interesting case. If he doesn't get in, I don't think dunn has a chance.

I did vote for "maybe, with a few more years" because I don't think it is out of the question if he can stay around and be productive, but I'd give him a slim chance

He is way down in all the major categories: attempts, yards, TDs, yards per attempt. He is even low in the all purpose yards categories.

His chances were severely limited just by the fact that he played in a dome and still couldn't put together consistant numbers. He will be on peoples lists but he won't get in for a long time.

I will say this, for a smaller guy (by NFL standards), he is really pretty durable. He really hasn't missed many games over his long career.

This would be a maybe vote. I think Dunn has 2 or 3 more good years in him. Just take yesterday's game for example, he had 115 yards rushing on 22 carries. But, as we stated earlier the touchdowns aren't there.

With eight games left for the Bucs this season, Dunn needs 15 catches to get to 500 for his career. (He has 22 through the first eight games.)

He also needs 377 yards rushing to make it to 5,000 for his Bucs career. (He already has 5,981 with the Falcons.)

In the age of the multi-purpose back, Dunn just isn't worthy of Hall of Fame induction.

Fantastic player, but not great.

Can you honestly say he compares to a Marshall Faulk or Thurman Thomas?

He does. He's not nearly as good as either.

IMO Dunn is the NFL's version of Harold Baines.

Good comparison especially with the stats being similarly short of major milestones needed...

While Baines was beloved by all in his cities at least Dunn has a shot at some point in the future if he gets the right people into the room to discuss his worth...

You want to hear something funny? As of Sunday, November 23, 2008, Warrick Dunn has exactly 15,000 yards from scrimmage in his NFL career.

Maybe he should retire now, so as not to mess up that nice, even number by gaining more yards, lol!

;)

Are you ready for this?

Dunn finished the season just 14 yards shy of 5,000 in his careeer with the Bucs! :(

I hope he comes back and plays at least one more season for the Bucs!

Next year he easily passes OJ Simpson, Corey Dillon, and John Riggins probably putting him at 16th all time. If he plays another year after(easily doable if he is close enough in yardage) he could get enough yards to pass Franco Harris and Thurman Thomas- two who played the bulk of their careers on astroturf which negates the dome enhanced argument I brought up earlier.

It's looking more and more like he will get the needed yards after the benefit of the doubt is despelled. He won't be a first ballot guy but he could get in after a wait...

Well it sure looks like his NFL career is over. It's almost the end of the 2009 season and no team has come a callin'.

If they had a hof for good guys or guys doing more with size than expected, then yes, but not in the regular hof.
