View Full Version : Stupid things broadcasters say

All broadcasters for all 4 networks seem to work from the same script. What makes you cringe every time you hear it?
For me it's 'This team is 34-1 when <insert RB name here> carries the ball 25+ times'. In the words of philosopher Charlie Brown, AARRGGHH. If it's that easy why don't they just hand him the ball the first 25 plays and guarantee themselves the win. When a team is behind they throw, if they're ahead they run. The team didn't win because he carried 25+ times, he carried 25+ times because they won.
Have you ever noticed that you never get 'this team is 34-1 when they throw the ball 30+ times'?

I get irked every time a commentator says something along the lines of "<Enter Player Here> is out with a knee <or other general body part>"...a knee what? We all have knees.
I'm sure there is more...when I hear them again I'll post it.

I can't stand all of the "former (insert team name) player" for guys who spent a minute on the field for one team only to be cut during the preseason...hearing it once is fine, but to hear it 20 times in a game for some guys is a pain in the neck.

It's more like the "former Buccaneer Ryan Leaf" type of deal.

Is San Diego still paying him?
At least announcers don't say "<<insert team>> is 20-0 when they score more points than their opponents."

Another thing that irritates me is announcers that say an average player in their game is 'one of the best in the league'. I was watching a Cardinals game several years ago (which should be punishment enough) when someone refered to 'future hall of fame coach Dave McGinnis'. I rewound and listened again in disbelief.

I personally don't like it when the announcers don't know what's going on on the field. For example, when they don't know what is being called but everyone watching on TV does. It seems that they should know, since its their job...

Even shorter time frame, usually just a game or two for the guy. It's nice to hear once, but more than that is really stretching things- it's not a stat! It's not even that noteworthy after one time!
I'll expand it to indirectly include a guy who was on the team a decade ago(I still hear that from time to time:mad: ) That's a long time, they don't have to keep reminding folks about someone who was either cut or signed elsewhere!!!

Sort of like when they say "there is some weather coming in to the New York area"

It's the same with baseball when people refer to Pedro Martinez as a "former Dodger." No one thinks of him that way. I bet there will be some people in Detroit who will refer to Jeff Garcia as "former Brown."

I bet Tommy Lasorda thinks of Pedro as a former Dodger! After all it was Lasorda's tinkering and stupidity that got Pedro and his ensuing Hall of Fame career dealt away for some crummy middle infielder who's name I can't remember.
But that's for another forum.

Keep watching Kornheiser this year, he should be good for about 10 pages worth of stupid quotes by the time the season ends.

Game 1
2nd quarter
Al Michaels
"One guy coming off a shoulder and the other guy coming off a knee."
Was talking about Brees and Culpepper.

That makes me sort of glad I missed the game this evening. Sadly that's the kind of statement that'll be made in almost every telecast throughout the season.
Filling in a couple hours of broadcast time is hardly easy. Dead air is the worst thing from a sponsor and network standpoint. Having been there, I don't let simple comments bother me because it's a necessary part of it.

Yet alot of people watching would rather the odd bit of dead air than to have to listen to the obvious being stated to them.

Not the people who pay for the games to be broadcast. That's been the standard of any type of broadcast since broadcasting began.

Ah, so more like "the former Charger, Eli Manning" or "the former Giant, Philip Rivers".

Lol, it's not only announcers making these statements. This is straight from KFFL's take on Rudi Johnson's performance last week:
Sep 11 Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals have a record of 12-0 the last three seasons when RB Rudi Johnson runs the football at least 25 times.
Well, golly gee whitakers, if I was Marvin Lewis, I would just script the first 25 plays of the game to be Rudi toting the rock. I never knew coaching could be so easy. ;)
Sep 14 Snake, of Pigskin-Fever, reports that the Bengals are 12-0 over the last 3 seasons, when they can get in the red zone twice as much as their opponents do.
I should send in an application to KFFL :p

Who said this is long lost or forgotten, but there was an NFL game
in the late '60s where the announcer actually said of the team on
offense: "Well, they're either going to run or pass".

whose shoulder and I guess I'll assume his father's knee. (didn't we all come off that at some time in our life.)

The increasingly inaccurately named "brady_branch" of Pigskin-Fever reports that the New England Patriots are undefeated the last five years when they score more points than their opponent.
I'll get that KFFL job before you, Snake. :p

An actual stat: Carson Palmer is 3-4 with 3 TDs when it's 1st and less than 3. I haven't seen anyone use it (other than me, just now), but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

I the history of the Bengals, they are 254-0 when they score more points than their opponents. You heard it here first.

How can it be first and less than three? Unless, of course, the ball is three or fewer yards from the goal line.
Oh, I get it. :o
I liked Jerome Bettis, but I'm glad he retired so we don't have to hear that constant stream of idiotic bus puns every time he touches the ball.
How about this one "These two teams don't like each other"
Funnily on Monday nights game there was mention how there was a healthy rivalry between the Jags and Steelers and the first thing to come out of Theismanns mouth was "that means they hate each other"...what a sad way to begin the broadcast.
