I don't think the rivalry talk has started so I thought I'd start a thread on it.

I tried to list all the big to really big rivalries below. If I've forgotten some could somebody enlighten me.

Anyway, preferences? predictions? comments? on any of the rivalries?

I'm a Buckeye fan but have always gotten passionate about rivalries I shouldn't even care about when watching those games. I wondered if anybody else watches rivalries with the same enthusiasm, if sometimes just because the result affects your team's season.

Southern Miss used to have a big rivalry with Louisville, but now they've left our conference (If we ever play them again, watch out!).

Now it is Memphis (we call it the Black and Blue Bowl). Since neither of our in state schools will play us (Miss State and Ole Miss), Memphis usually serves as a proxy (they will play Memphis for some reason).

The big game this year should be Notre Dame vs USC.

I watch them just because they're on...

Auburn has to come to Tuscaloosa this year. I think Alabama will take care of them.

I really don't consider Ohio St.-Illinois a rivalry except for the fact that the trophy died after two years (I think) of being a trophy and the trophy is the only thing that keeps me interested. I don't think there is another trophy game for the Bucks (except sometimes the MICH-OHST winner is awarded a Big10 trophy).

The Bucks don't play for any trophies other than the illibuck anymore. i was disappointed they changed the ceremony from the halftime of the following year's game. i was looking forward to getting the trophy back for our 02 win this year.

Growing up in Upstate New York, I can see that you missed a few rivalry games.

1. Syracuse - Penn St = Until 1990, when they broke off the rivalry, they had played every year since 1922. No team has played Syracuse as many times. Penn State had about a 15 game lead in the series, can't remember the exact record atm. By the way, I believe they are renewing the rivalry again in a couple of years. The reason it got broken off is because in the 10 year contract, Penn State demanded 6 home games to Syracuse's 4. Syracuse told them basically to go to hell.

2. Pitt - Penn State = Obvious reasons here, same TV area, recruit the same kids, yada yada yada. They also stopped playing due to the reason I gave above for Syracuse - Penn State.

3. Syracuse - West Virgiinia = This a newer rivalry game, that came about in 1993. They play for the Ben Schwartzwalder Trophy. He played at West Virginia and was a Head Coach at Syracuse.

4. Pitt - West Virginia = "The Backyard Brawl" Not sure how you missed this one. It started in 1895, and is one of the longest ongoing rivalry games. Alot of people dont realize this, but the campuses are only about 70 miles apart.

BTW, Penn State - Ohio State is not a rivalry game. Maybe, over time, it could develop into one, but it is not there yet.

Cal-USC and Cal-UCLA are pretty heated games as well.

Notre Dame/Navy wasn't mentioned, neither was Navy/Air Force or Army/Air Force. All 3 service academies battle every year for the Commander in Chief's Trophy.
