Koren Robinson, Minnesota Vikings Wide Receiver and 2005 Pro Bowl selection, was arrested last night on DWI and numerous other charges. Robinson lit up a radar gun and then refused to stop for police officers, taking them on a high speed 10-mile chase before giving up. After police got Robinson out of the car, he began to cooperate and took a field sobriety test -- which he allegedly failed.
He now faces another DWI charge and the much more serious felony charge of attempting to flee from police.
The 26-year-old wide receiver from North Carolina State put up huge numbers for the Seattle Seahawks in 2002 -- 78 Rec, 1,240 Yds, 15.9 Avg, 5 TD. But after that season his numbers declined and his problems increased.
After several alcohol related problems, the Seahawks released Robinson last year. He then spent 28 days in an alcohol treatment facility. And got picked up in training camp by the Vikings. He started out on special teams and really made his mark -- earning a trip to the 2005 Pro Bowl. His comeback seemed complete and it appeared as if he was poised for another breakout season in 2006.
This July Robinson voluntarily checked himself into a rehab center for further treatment. And last night he royally messed up his life again. No word yet on what the Vikings will do with Robinson. In March they signed him to a three year contract with $5.5 million in guaranteed money. Of course they can get out of that if the NFL suspends him for violating the drug policy or if the team wants to try to void the contract on grounds of an "ethics violation". But it would be nice to see somebody stand by this guy and try to help him, unlike Seattle that just dumped him like so much garbage.
For all his talent, this guy just can't seem to beat the bottle. Now he faces serious jail time and an uncertain NFL future. It's tragic.
