I thought that like BBF, PSF should also have a historical photograph thread.

So feel free to post any pictures that are from anytime in football's past.

William "Pudge" Heffelfinger 1892, The first professional football player in history

I see that you chose to keep your baseball-fever name for the sake of continuity, as did I.

Pudge was the first paid player because, at 170 lbs, he was much larger than any of his contemporaries. He also was the first 'wedge buster'. during the days of the mass momentum plays all the players would lock hands and escort the ball carrier down the field. Pudge was the first player to jump over the escorts and put his knees into the chest of the ball carrier. I can see Urlacher doing that.

I did not know that, thanks for the info.

This record is one that will probably never be broken,
not even by Steve Spurrier!

Seriously, I think that it and Cy Young's better than
500 wins as a baseball pitcher are untouchable.

Yep, the playing field is somewhat leveled now and if any team comes close to it the coach will get blasted.

One of my all-time favorite stats from any single game. Total combined first downs by both teams: 0

uh . . . does that fact that I have 'favorite stats' make me a geek? Oh well, if that doesn't thousands of other things do.

What can I say, vertical stripes are slimming :p

Seriously, if you are to stink as bad as the Broncos did in their AFL years, you might as well look good doing it.

Denver did win that game, tough.

Who was Georgia Tech's coach?

Bill Alexander, who had a long, distinguished career at Tech:

"Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne once said, 'Bill gets more out of nothing than any coach in America.'"

Not for the 1916 Cumberland game. Guess again.

I guess all those "2's" got to me. I thought the game was in 1922, during the Alexander era, but it was earlier. The coach at GT in 1916 was possibly the most famous name in college football history after Rockne:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Heisman

"Heisman's running up the score against a totally outmanned opponent was supposedly motivated by revenge against Cumberland's baseball team running up the score against Tech 22-0 the previous year."

He coached at 8 colleges (primarily Clemson) which probably explains why I never associated him with any particular school.

He also coached at Auburn. Pat Sullivan (1971) and Bo Jackson (1985)
are the only Heisman Trophy winners from a school Heisman coached at.
