This is something completely frivilous, but I find it sort've interesting. It's a formula I came across in an article about 7 years ago that measures how successful teams have been since the merger. It's nothing really in depth, just fun is all.

Anyway, over the last couple weeks, with spare time I've been going through teams and updating what their score would be.

Here's the formula (the tweak about division titles I added myself):

Losing Season: -1
Winning Season: 1
Playoff Appearance: 2
Conference Championship Appearance: 4
Conference Title: 8
Super Bowl Title: 16

Extra Point for Division Title

And here are the results:

1. Cowboys: 157
2. Steelers: 146
3. 49ers: 129
4. Dolphins: 106
5. Raiders: 104
6. Broncos: 94
7. Redskins: 89
8. Patriots: 87
9. Vikings: 79
10. Rams: 74
11. Colts: 56
12. Giants: 50
13. Bills: 44
14. Eagles: 42
15. Packers: 42
16. Bears: 39
17. Titans: 30
18. Chargers: 26
19. Seahawks: 23
20. Chiefs: 22
21. Browns: 21
22. Ravens: 20
23. Buccaneers: 20
24. Bengals: 19
25. Jaguars: 12
26. Panthers: 12
27. Jets: 9
28. Lions: 6
29. Falcons: 3
30. Saints: -3
31. Texans: -5
32. Cardinals: -14

I also decided to do a brief division myself to see how many points a team averages per season. Which really serves no purpose at all, but it's interesting.

1. Cowboys: 4.243 (Championship Game Appearance)
2. Steelers: 3.946 (Championship Game Appearance)
3. 49ers: 3.486 (Championship Game Appearance)
4. Dolphins: 2.865 (Division Title)
5. Raiders: 2.811
6. Broncos: 2.541 (Division Title)
7. Redskins: 2.406 (Playoff Appearance)
8. Patriots: 2.351 (Playoff Appearance)
9. Vikings: 2.135 (Playoff Appearance)
10. Rams: 2.000 (Playoff Appearance)
11. Ravens: 1.818 (Playoff Appearance)
12. Colts: 1.514 (Playoff Appearance)
13. Giants: 1.351 (Winning Season)
14. Bills: 1.189 (Winning Season)
15. Eagles: 1.135 (Winning Season
16. Packers: 1.135 (Winning Season)
17. Bears: 1.054 (Winning Season)
18. Jaguars: 1.000 (Winning Season)
19. Panthers: 1.000 (Winning Season)
20. Titans: .811 (Winning Season)
21. Seahawks: .742 (Winning Season)
22. Chargers: .703 (Winning Season)
23. Browns: .618 (Winning Season)
24. Buccaneers: .606 (Winning Season)
25. Chiefs: .595 (Winning Season
26. Bengals: .514 (Winning Season)
27. Jets: .243 (.500 Season)
28. Lions: .162 (.500 Season)
29. Falcons: .081 (.500 Season)
30. Saints: -0.081 (Losing Season)
31. Cardinals: -0.378 (Losing Season)
32. Texans: -1.000 (Losing Season)

Interesting formula...

so looking at:

Conference Championship Appearance: 4
Conference Title: 8

Does the Conference Champs get 12 points total? or just 8?

Also, I am somewhat surprised there isn't a 100 point bonus for going undefeated in the regular season (minimum 16 games). That would put the Patriots in first place...

Conference title is 8. Nine if you won your division.

So, if the Cowboys win the Super Bowl this year it will give them 17 more points.

And this doesn't include 2007.

And why would I create a crazy tweak to support the Patriots?

One problem, 26 of 32 have a winning record on average or maybe you should change it so that if your average is below one, you average a .500 season.

I don't really understand why that matters. The points per year thing means pretty much nothing. It's mostly just a way to compare younger franchises.

The one big problem I see with this is that a 9-7 season with a division title gets the same value as 16-0.

That's why there is the playoffs. Each playoff win, etc. is reflected in the numbers. Division titles are treated the same currently, anyway, without a points system. To give extra credit for any sort of record would skew the intent of the system.

The NFL has had champions for long before the Superbowl started or the NFL/AFL merger happened. I think the NFL champs from before the Superbowl should get get same points as Superbowl champs.

The AFL and the AAFC were inferior leagues up until almost the merger.

This would put teams like the Bears and Packers much higher on the list -- unless you want to ignore the first 40 years of NFL history.

It's only post-merger.

Only if that 9-7 season results in a divsion title and the exact same playoff success. In which case, I don't think there's a real difference that matters.
