Anyone from Baseball Fever see the collaborative ranking thread (http://www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=70849)?
I wanted to see if we might actually have enough members to try that here. We'll see.
Basically, we put together an ordered list of the greatest QBs of all-time, one at a time. After the person ahead of you goes, add another player to the list by copy and pasting, then putting in the greatest QB you think is not yet on the list.
So, if the post in front of you looks like this:
1. Tony Romo
2. Ryan Leaf
3. LaDanian Tomlinson
Then your post will look like this:
1. Tony Romo
2. Ryan Leaf
3. LaDanian Tomlinson
4. Sean Salisbury
Got it? Easy, yeah? I would say since there is less traffic here, let's say you can post once every 5 on the list. So if you post 4th, wait at least until 9 before you add another player.
Let's see if this works.

Man, I didnt think I could disagree with the top 4 anymore than I do right now. Only Montana belongs IMHO. Then again, i'm sure everyone will disagree with me as well.

Unitas and Elway don't belong in the top 5?!

I'm a bit shocked as well, the guy I have #3 hasn't been put up yet. However, the first four guys posted were all in my top five.

My #2, and #5 haven't been put up yet.
This is even slower than I thought. Maybe it should be once every five posts. It will just be us, but if we're the only ones that post. . .

Is there a no name-dropping policy? Because I want to see if your #5 is the same as my #6. I've got Brady #7, btw.
philkid3

Nah, drop any names you want. I've got Graham 2nd and Marino 5th.

Alright, I underestimated how quiet it is here. I'm going to lower the rules to posting once every 5 selections. May just be five people alternating for the most part, but oh well.
1. John Elway
2. Johnny Unitas
3. Joe Montana
4. Brett Favre
5. Tom Brady
6. Otto Graham

I had 'em reversed. Marino 3, Graham 6.
1. John Elway
2. Johnny Unitas
3. Joe Montana
4. Brett Favre
5. Tom Brady
6. Otto Graham
7. Dan Marino
Names can be switched, but I have no problems with any of the top 7 as the top 7.

My only real issue is Elway as high as number 1. I also wouldn't have Brady as high as 5, but I tend to underweight active players until their careers playout.
Looks like it is my turn in the every 5 rule. I don't have a list written down like some people do, so I'm hoping I'm not missing anyone, but the guys I was looking at are Starr, Tarkenton, Manning, Staubach, Bradshaw, Baugh. I went with Starr for those great Green Bay teams.
Someone asked about the "no-name" dropping policy. I for one encourage name dropping, as I like to see who people are thinking of next
1. John Elway

Staubach at 10? :'(
Next I'm looking at Steve Young, Peyton Manning, Sid Luckman, Troy Aikman, Dan Fouts and Terry Bradshaw.
1. John Elway
2. Johnny Unitas
3. Joe Montana
4. Brett Favre
5. Tom Brady
6. Otto Graham
7. Dan Marino
8. Bart Starr
9. Fran Tarkenton
10. Roger Staubach
As far as how it's going, I think Brady is quite a bit too high, and Starr and Tarkenton are a little too high. Sammy Baugh and Steve Young seem like they're next up to be way too low. And I'm betting this list will make the difference between Brady and Manning out to be more than it actually is.
But that's part of what makes the list interesting. Peoples' opinions of quarterbacks change pretty wildly from person to person.

I think we're thinking of the same guy. JOE THEISMAN!
Theisman punted early in his career, too. Can you imagine another QB doing that?*

Oh, wait. I can pick.
1. John Elway
2. Johnny Unitas
3. Joe Montana
4. Brett Favre
5. Tom Brady
6. Otto Graham
7. Dan Marino

9. Fran Tarkenton

It was tough to not pick Peyton Manning, but I'm not a fan of his past tendency to throw teammates under the bus or help contribute to their failure. (See Vandejagt, Mike. Especially after his last game as a Colt where Manning practically refused to give him better positioning on the missed field goal that lost the playoff game). That is not a good quality for a player in THE leadership position.
Plus, Manning has all the respect in the world for Baugh.

Real hard choice for me here between Manning and another guy. In the end, I went with the guy who I've seen play, and as such, can justify this selection based on more than stats and opinions of others.

It's requiring quite a bit of thought at this point. I think some of the QBs of the distant past are getting a little short-shrifted overall, but I don't have any real complaints about any of the names above. Some could be higher. Some could be lower. I don't think we've really missed too much at the expense of the names chosen thus far.

Are we allowed to rank guys who played only at the college level? I understand that they wouldn't be where we are now, but later on, could Jason White or Nile Kinnick be considered?

I meant for this to be NFL, so no. But then I also can't stop you from putting what ever criteria you want on your choice.

When I added Flutie, I included his time in the CFL, USFL, and his college play was in the back of my mind. He obviously wouldn't be that high with just his NFL stats. I wouldn't be surprised if the vote for Moon included CFL, too.
I'd be hard pressed to include anyone without any NFL experience. I think we'd have to get pretty far down the list before any real consideration, we'll see how long this project goes.

6th all time in passing yards.
8th all time in passing TDs
6th all time in passes completed
Heisman Trophy winner
2 time pro-bowl
1 time all-pro
He unfortunately played on some veyr bad teams during his career.

I, myself, don't have issues with Testaverde. Yes, his career numbers are aided by longevity, but that, it and of itself, shouldn't be taken as a big negative. Testaverde was an very good QB for a very long time, and that's about where we're at right now.
In regards to Flutie, I would think his CFL and USFL tenure needs to be considered. College QBs, though, and especially of recent vintage, are very much about the system they play in. There's a reason pro teams did not even sniff Jason White's way, or Eric Crouch wasn't considered at QB. There success had near as much to do with the system they played in as their own ability.
There are a couple more old time QBs I am presently looking at, as well as some of the gunslingers of the 70's and 80's. While visiting family over the holiday, I found my Top 100 Quarterbacks book, which came out in the mid-eighties. The number of Quarterbacks throughout NFL history with a sustainable career is not that great.

In White's case, he had two horribly injured knees. That's why nobody drafted him, not because he wasn't talented.

I just picked at 48 so was waiting, although it is unclear how many posters are still playing this game

I'd say about a half-dozen regular or semi-regular participants. We have a couple one-shotters. Oh, well. Their reasoning for not continuing is their own.
We're back at 51, though.

I don't think you can remove anybody from the list once they're up. Especially not guys who have been up as long as Flutie and Everett have.
As for Green, I've got him as one of the top five QBs in the league each year from 2002-05. By contrast, from 2000-2007, Donovan McNabb, who was put up four spots ahead of Green, finished in the top ten just once, and in the top fifteen only twice.

We've gone this far, we can't stop now! Not over a little minor quibbling.
I've actually run out of QBs that I had interest in. I made a list about 30 spots back of 10 or so QBs that would be next on my list, and they've now all been added.
When I have free time, I'll do more research to get me to more spots, but we're getting to some slim pickings. I also don't think the older QBs will be as fairly represented at this level since they won't have the name recognition as some of their comparable QBs from more recent days

That is true. I have a small handful of older QBs, but the most are at least contemporary to the 80's and later.
It pretty much is at the point where we can throw any number of names out there and they'd be interchangeable with the next 10 or 20. In my 20-year-old Top 100 Quarterbacks book I mentioned earlier it says there are about 40 truly great QBs and the rest are at least a step below. We've reached a step below. Or three.
