I don't know how many recall the preview magazine - I think it was Street & Smith's, it was paperback, I know. Anyway, they had this fantasy thing about what might have happened if Walker hadn't jumped to the USFL. Basically, he leads Georgia to an undefeated season with the only tie being at Auburn (their only loss in OTL, with a tie at Clemson), Albama is unbeaten, and Georgia beats them for the national title int he Sugar Bowl. he wins an Olympic medal, then the Colts go winless, he demands a trade to be closer to home, and the Falcons acquire his rights and build "The House that Herschell Built" for him. (An obvious joke on John Elway's rights being traded, plus of course the House That Ruth Built.) Pretty clever stuff.

Anyway, just erminiscing about those days in the last few weeks as I clean out stuff from my parents' and bring it to my house. And, I got to wondering, what do you think would have happened with Walker? I was thinking Tampa had the first pick, but they must have traded it to New England. I'm checking the first round and don't see them.

My guess is some other team makes a trade for him. Houston was building with offensive linemen, and I thikn they would have bypassed Fryar. The Giants were under Bill Parcells and thinking defensive first. I can see the Eagles getting him, going from 4th to first; New England would probably be satisfied that they could go to 4th and still get Fryar, if they wanted him that badly. Or, did Tampa trade late and they might not have traded if Walker was available?

I think the Eagles would be a good fit, as he'd be just about what they had before; he never developed into the superstar many expected, but he was a solid back, like a Wilbert Montgomery.

Whether he'd have been a 2-time Heisman winner is open for debate, though - Mike Rozier had an awesome season. The tie with Clemson would probably be a win, but I can see Auburn still beating Georgia; that defense was incredible that year. The bowls might have happened the same way, too - although with Walker there, it would have been tempting to invite Georgia to play Nebraska, with a matchup of Rozier and Walker going at it. And, Miami playing Texas instead.

What do you all think?

If Walker was in the draft, New England would have been foolish not to draft him. They were still trying to replace Sam Cunningham, Tony Collins was the main back and they would get the other half of the Pony Express, Craig James. Drafting Walker would go in line with the previous season's drafting of young QB Tony Eason. On top of a strong defense led by Andre Tippett, and they would have viewed Walker as the marquee back they needed. Not to slight Fryar, buty I don't see the Pats passing him up.

Walker should be a two-time Heisman winner. his best season was Georgia's National Championship season of 1980, his freshman year. 1983 would have been incredible if he was there. Auburn did hand the lone defeat to Bernie Kosar and Miami that year, so they full well could have defeated Georgia.

No, actually Florida was the lone loss for the U that year, not Auburn. The Gators beat them 28-3 in the first game of the 83 season in Kosar's debut.

As for Walker, if he stays in college in 83, and doesn't go to the USFL, Georgia may have won at least a share of the national title, depending upon how Texas and Nebraska, who were also undefeated, would have done in their bowl games.

Then, I agree with Walker going #1 overall to New England. If the Pats take Herschel, and then somehow got Jerry Rice the next year, they probably would have won a SB in the 80's.
