Is it true that he has a broken hand? How bad is it anyway?

Hope he doesn't have and hanging chads! ;)

Well, he did have a broken hand. According to this article, he's ready to play on Monday against Arizona.

Just call him Fresh Legs Frank.

Running back Frank Gore, held out of all four preseason games while his broken right hand healed, will bring fresh legs to the 49ers' regular-season opener Monday night against Arizona.

For players, especially those who carry or catch the ball, "fresh legs" ranks just behind "day off" on the scale of importance.

Gore looked particularly quick on the few handoffs he took in Monday's practice without pads. It's a reflection of him working hard on his conditioning while he was out and of not taking a beating for the last month in camp.

"I feel good," he said. "Coaches were working me out, keeping me in shape with explosive drills."

Gore has had no contact since breaking the hand July 30, the second day of training camp. He will put on pads Friday for the first time since then, when practice attire calls for full pads.

"I feel once I get out there, the more I'm in, the better I am," he said. "The more touches I get, the better I am. I'll be all right."

As coach Mike Nolan pointed out, Gore had more than 300 carries last season - he should know where the holes are.

"Every carry I get, I feel more comfortable," Gore said. "It's really important. I'll probably be real nervous. I'll feel better with the first hit."

Gore is wearing a protective pad on his hand in practice this week and will do so in Monday night's game at Candlestick. He said the hand is no longer painful.

Nolan said, "We didn't hold him out of anything" in Monday's practice and noted, "He has fresh legs. That's a good thing."

Now that the games start counting in the standings, Gore's teammates are excited to have him back. Gore rushed for 1,695 yards last season and made the Pro Bowl. His stated goal for this season is 2,000 yards.

"He's such a big part of this offense," quarterback Alex Smith said. "It will be nice to get him back. Obviously, you look at his production. To come back fresh and excited, it'll be nice. Not only fresh legs but attitude. He always brings a fresh attitude."

As far as bay-area backs go, I'd still rather have (Frank) Gore than (Michael) Bush -- that pretty much goes for the Whitehouse, too.
