I'd like to see Rod go in, if nothing else, beacuse he might just be the best undrafted player in league history (or at least, since there's been a draft). But it might require some patience.
And frankly, I think he should have called it a career at the end of last season. Especially with his injury, I can't see him coming back and being anything but a role player. And that's too bad when you've been as good as he was.

The Broncos of the late 90s wouldn't have been the great teams that they were without him. He is up there in stats that matter- receptions and yardage. It is/was better than Michael Irvin and a couple of others who are in so he warrents enshrinement.
If he doesn't get in right away he will get in after a short wait. He will get in though.

Before, I thought he might get consideration but not get in, but, after looking at his stats, and just how remarkable he was, I think now that he should get in. I think that he had 70+ catches 9 straight years or something like that, not something even some HOFers can claim.

There are so very many wide receivers ahead of Smith, if he gets in, it's going to be a long wait.

Right now on the semifinal ballot there is Cris Carter and Andre Reed. Jerry Rice is not eligible yet, but he may well be unanimous. I think all three will get in before Smith is eligible. Tim Brown is also ahead of Smith. On the 2009 HOF preliminary ballot, the players I might rank Branch, Carmichael, Ellard and Fryar ahead of Smith. Might. If Sterling Sharpe hadn't gotten injured as he did, he might rank ahead of him. Can't forget Bob Hayes, a Seniors candidate again this year.
Currently playing, I can see Harrison, Moss and Owens in line ahead of him. Hines Ward may well be ahead of him. Same with Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.
There is a line ahead of him. He may get in, but it won't be easy. Being the No. 1 wideout on a couple of super bowl winners is better than being the No. 2 or 3 guy for a long time, but there is such a glu at the position in this age of wide open offenses.

Bruce became the fifth receiver with over 1,000 catches today and is one average game away from surpassing 15,000 receiving yards.
It's going to be tough on Smith with guys like Bruce who have both huge accomplishments and a ring.
BTW ... kudos to Bruce on a great career. :applaud:
