Am I the only one who has noticed this kid? May be too early to say but thus far, he's looked better than Cassel.

I think it's a bit early, especially considering it was just the preseason...Remember the hype around Michael Bishop? He looked better than Tom Brady in the preseason back in 2000 but looks were deceiving...

If he's as good as he looked in the games then Vinny T. wouldn't have been brought in again to be the third QB...I think he needs time on the practice squad and then fights it out next season for the backup role.

All I said was that he looked better than Cassel and I stand by that. I didn't say he should replace anybody. I knew someone would bring up Michael Bishop's name.

He and Cassel had very similar stats in the Giants game, with Gutierrez probably being a bit better. However, keep in mind that Cassel, being the technical backup, would face second-team defenses primarily, whereas Gutierrez would face worse players on defense.

As for replacing Cassel, it's not going to happen. He probably won't even pass Testaverde. He's probably got a spot on the practice squad, but they won't put him on the roster in his first year, especially not with Testaverde and Cassel as incumbents.

I couldn't help bring his name up, he's the best example of hype and what the preseason can do to you :D

The plus side though is that having him and Cassel fight for the backup job will improve both players heaven forbid the team need to use one of them in a game...I think that competition is what made Brady a great player back in '01- the competition against Bishop that led to Brady winning the spot on the team and ultimately the starting job.

A few hours later and you are wrong as Vinny T is gone, Gutierrez is in as the third QB. :D

Hmmm... that surprises me a little. I really thought they'd keep Testaverde, because he's the veteran and already knows the system.

He's also well over 40 and his arm isn't what it used to be. He was only in there to help Gutierrez and Cassel learn the system and was an insurance policy in case either of them didn't work out well this year.

Still, having him there would be kind of like having an extra coach. I can't say that I'm unhappy he's gone, because it means that three decent QBs get to stay, but I am a little surprised.

He could still be brought in provided he doesn't get picked up by another team. That could still happen if heaven forbid one of their QBs gets hurt...

And if he's being brought in again and again as a coach why don't they just hire him to be a coach instead of wasting a roster spot that should go to a deserving youngster?

I'm not going to tell you, "I told you so" but, well, ummmm, yeah.

If/when he's cut next year will it still be "I told you so"?

Getting put in the game because the 2nd string QB throws an INT to a first string defender may have shown who the Patriots will end up keeping next year...Matt Cassel's days with the team are numbered, Gutierrez threw a great game in mop up duty in the 4th quarter after Cassel was benched.

I could be wrong about the kid; I just think he's got much more talent than Cassel.

Now somebody refresh my memory: Did New England give SF the second of their two 1st round draft picks in this last draft to get their (SF's) 1st rounder in the next draft? I know the Pats have the pick, I'm just not sure if I remember how they got it.

I believe they took Brandon Meriweather with the pick they got from Seattle for Deion Branch, then traded their own pick to San Francisco, who took Joe Staley, for San Francisco's #1 pick this year.

First round pick at #28(Joe Staley OT) to New England in exchange for a fourth round pick at #110 and a 1st rounder.

That fourth round pick that they got for this year was key to the trade for Randy Moss.
