With the second overall draft choice, the Detroit Lions selected Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson, widely regarded as the best player in this year's draft, and the best WR prospect in many, many years. Supposedly, the Lions turned down several trade offers for the #2 spot, but that doesn't mean they won't trade Johnson to another team either during or after the draft. Johnson is the fourth WR to be selected with the Lions's top pick in the last five drafts, with LB Ernie Sims being the only exception (in last year's draft).

If they choose to hang on to Johnson, the Lions will once again (on paper) have one of the top receiving corps in the league, lining up on the other side of the field from Pro-Bowler Roy Williams, and slot man Mike Furrey. Johnson is a huge, fast reciever with great hands and fantastic character. Let's all hope he turns out better than the last #2 overall pick we selected, Charles Rogers. Personally, I'm very pleased with the pick, and hope Johnson is the best thing the league has seen since sliced bread. The two other players the Lions targeted before the draft, T Joe Thomas and DE Gaines Adams, went in the next two selections (to Cleveland and Tampa Bay, respectively).

I think this was a good pick for the Lions. I KNOW he'll pan out for the Lions. It's just too bad he couldn't continue his career in Atlanta.

It's amazing to think of how many WR's the Lions have taken with their first pick over the last 20 years or so, going back to guys like Herman Moore and Johnnie Morton. To me, that says the Fords really like WR's.

What about Matt Millen, the guy orchestrating the draft the last few years?
Moore and Morton gave the Fords a lot to like. Rogers could have been good but the freak injuries and the off-field issues ruined him. Williams was simply uninspired. That year off of college may have hurt him. Johnson should do well, and it's always nice to land the top-rated player in the draft, but they had a few too many unanswered problems that tell me they'll be back in the same situation next year.
