I hate any college fight song that involves spelling the school name. This has got to be the most overused ploy in all of college football and to top it off that is the only part of the fight song the fans know.

Funny story about that I had a buddy in Florida that was an FSU graduate. He picked me up for lunch oneday and has a college football fight song CD playing. I ask him what is playing and he proudly informs me it is the Florida State fight song. I responded and said oh great so are there actually any lyrics to your schools fight song other the F-L-O-R-I-D-A S-T-A-T-E, Florida Stat, Florida State, Florida State, Whew! At this point he gets a little sensitive and swithces to "Ramblin' Wreck". Being as that I am a Tech graduate I proceed to sing the fight song word for word followed by White & Gold. The next day he comes to pick me up and he has the CD playing again and starts to sing the Florida State fight song. I rolled my eyes and said you went home last night and learned that just to show me didn't you. He again became sensitive, said No and turned the CD off.

On a different note did any other schools have lyrics they would sing to the tune of their Rivals fight Song? re did at Tech, he have a great rendition of "To Hell with Georgia" we sing everytime they play "Glory to old Georgia"

Nice story. I can't answer your second question though. At my JC, our athletic department's website hasn't been updated in a couple of years. They say to go to the local newspaper's site to check on them but they don't mention the school's athletics anywhere either. Also, it's not like the school posts schedules anyhwere like my HS did, so I don't know when our teams play, so I couldn't attend any sporting events even if I could (which I can't because I don't drive and the campus is 10 miles out of town in the middle of nowhere). It's very frustrating.

I agree with your first point completely, especially when it refers to a school like Florida State with a long name. Once you have to write down what the people are saying to figure out what it is, the spelling is too long.

Ohio State has long sent the "O-H-I-O" around the four sides of the stadium. That is very unique and impressive, especially when we get it going in an opponent's stadium - an annual tradition at Indiana and Northwestern and bowl games. Ohio State's fans travel maybe better than anyone else's. At home games my side of the stadium is usually the second "O". It's like the wave and is a lot of fun.

But that has caught on in other stadia, like Iowa, where it is ok. They have a good four sided stadium and it works. But at Michigan, they do "M-I-C-H-I-G-A-N" which is completely out of hand. And up there they lose the fun part about doing it at Ohio State. At Michigan, all the fans chant all the letters. The circulation around the stadium is lost.

As for the rival fight songs, in Ohio we can't stand "The Victors". And making a parody of it is too easy. So we invented our own song many years ago, "We don't give a damn for the whole state of Michigan".

The school president has outlawed the band from playing it, but when the band sends ensembles up into the stands in the second half the kids sneak it in sometimes. And the student section, and then the whole stadium, usually pipes up singing the song either during the game against Michigan or a week or two before Michigan.

One of my favorite moments was in 2004, before the OSU-Mich. game. OSU was an underdog in the game and I wasn't as up for it as usual. But when the Michigan band came out the entire stadium bood through the entire first couple songs, then piped up the "O-H-I-O" cheer which totally drowned out any sound from the band.

Although it's bad sportsmanship, sometimes when it's that lighthearted it's fun.

School fight songs often have interesting lyrics.

At Ball State, the song includes a verse saying "Let's pray for a victory"

At Purdue, "our frienship may she never lack"

Purdue also has another interesting one where after home teams get first downs the band plays its signature Purdue ending (you know it if you've heard it) and then the fans chant "1-2-3-4. First Down," a totally illogical and uninspiring few notes that are fun to mock for opposing fans.

At Indiana, the IU fans only know the end of the lyrics. They hum with the band until the end and then shout "IU" on the final two notes.

At Ohio State, they have changed the end of one of the songs from its original ending "So we'll fight on for victory" to "So we'll win that old conference now"

At Michigan, the school alma mater is the same as the fight song, just played slower.

Murray State's fight song is "The Old Gray Mare, she ain't what she used to be."

At Wisconsin, "Roll out the Barrel" is an official team fight song. And "The Budweiser song" is a popular one among students. Makes you wonder why the Badgers appeared on the cover of USA Today's story about college drinking. ;)

Does anyone know how long "Boomer Sooner" has been
used at Oklahoma? The words are different, but the
music is very similar to Yale's "Boola Boola".

Sounds like you are right on. From the Oklahoma website-

One of the most recognizable college fight songs in the country, 'Boomer Sooner' immediately evokes enthusiasm from OU fans and sends chills down the spines of those who dare to oppose them.

In 1905, Arthur M. Alden, a student in history and physiology whose father was a Norman jeweler, wrote the lyrics to the fight song, borrowing the tune from Yale University's 'Boola Boola' but improvising the words. A year later, an addition was made to it from North Carolina's 'I'm a Tarheel Born' and the two combined to form the university's fight song today. Though the tune was first made known by Yale, the everlasting success of Sooner squads has taken the melody of 'Boomer Sooner' to national popularity.

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, OK U!
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, OK U!
I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred
and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead
Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma
Rah Oklahoma, OK U!
